The Rio Caloria, in the Municipality of San Gillio, crosses the town with a sinuous path with a very weak slope. In the event of a flood, the reduced slopes and the presence of abundant vegetation in the riverbed limit the outflow capacity of the hydraulic sections, inducing flooding that frequently affects the municipal road network and the basements of the neighboring buildings. The intervention consists in the rectification of the stretch of the watercourse along the Via Paolo Borsellino, in order to increase the average slope by reducing its length. This is the construction of an earth channel with a trapezoid section, with a width of 2 m at the bottom and a useful depth of 1.8 m. The banks will be rivegetated spontaneously. The excavation material is used to fill the stretch of abandoned riverbed. Hydraulic sections are verified to contain within the banks the flow rates associated with a return time of 200 years, thus limiting the risk of flooding of the surrounding areas. Length of the intervention section: about 140 m.
